Walk For Winnie - Big Donations For Tiny Babies

Hundreds of graduates from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies gathered for the inaugural Walk For Winnie presented by Panera Bread.

Hundreds of graduates from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, along with their families, friends, supporters, doctors and nurses gathered at SeaWorld® Orlando for the inaugural Walk For Winnie presented by Panera Bread® on Saturday, September 12, which raised more than $200,000 for the NICU.

The graduates are some of the more than 40,000 babies that have received care in the NICU since it was founded in 1975 at Orlando Regional Medical Center. They reunited for the first-ever Walk For Winnie – an event to raise funding for the care of premature and critically-ill infants. The event raised more than $82,000 through team-based and individual online donations. You can still donate at WalkForWinnie.com.

“It’s exciting to see our former patients, their families, the community and our partner organizations come together to celebrate these miracle babies,” says Dr. Gregor Alexander. “For 40 years, we have relied on support from our community, and events like this ensure that we’re able to continue providing the care these infants need to survive and grow.”

Because of your support and the support of the more than 2,000 participants at Walk For Winnie, the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital is able to provide care for more than 1,600 premature and critically-ill babies each year. It is the largest single-site NICU in the world and one of the busiest in the country. It is equipped to provide the highest-level of care for high-risk newborns, including babies born prematurely or with congenital heart disease, infections, and various other conditions. It consistently provides the best outcomes in Florida for low birth-weight babies.
