OmniBed Isolettes Help Tiniest Babies Immediately After Birth
Thanks to a generous gift from Dan and Amy Fields, OmniBeds have been purchased for our tiniest and most fragile babies born at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.
An OmniBed is a warmer and isolette all in one which also provides easier access to babies during resuscitation by way of an open and close mechanism. This advanced technology allows the medical team delivering a baby less than 28 weeks to resuscitate, weigh and transport the baby to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The OmniBed is already warmed and the oxygen is the correct humidity for these tiny babies. Temperature and humidity are critical to NICU babies because fluctuations in their temperature can negatively affect since they are unable to regulate their own body temperature.
Without the OmniBeds, the medical team must perform all of the immediate care for the newborn and then bring the baby to the NICU by way of a transporter. The baby is then placed into an isolette. The OmniBed allows for these extremely fragile babies to receive immediate temperature regulation and humidity control to protect their fragile skin. Thank you Dan and Amy Fields for helping to improve the care we provide our NICU babies.
