Meet Olivia
Olivia’s story is not just one of survival. It is a testament to what is possible when compassionate people, advanced medicine and unwavering commitment come together.
Like many families during the holiday season, 9-year-old Olivia, her mother Lissette and her grandmother were traveling to Central Florida, looking forward to spending time together and creating new memories. In an instant, their lives changed forever when a serious car accident disrupted their journey.
In the moments that followed, strangers and first responders acted quickly. Lissette was taken to the Level 1 Trauma Center at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, while Olivia was airlifted to the pediatric trauma center at Orlando Health Children's Arnold Palmer Hospital.
What followed was an extraordinary example of collaboration, clinical expertise and persistence. Olivia’s injuries were complex, and her care required the insight of highly trained pediatric specialists working together across disciplines. When early imaging did not tell the full story, physicians trusted their experience and instincts, allowing them to identify hidden injuries and intervene quickly to prevent further harm.
At the same time, Lissette underwent her own surgeries. Although mother and daughter were separated for several weeks due to the severity of their injuries, their care teams worked closely with family members to ensure both stayed informed, supported and connected.
Olivia’s recovery required patience and intensive therapy. Along the way, she faced physical and emotional challenges — including the devastating loss of her grandmother. Throughout it all, Olivia’s care team provided support beyond just medicine, helping her and her family heal as a whole.
Slowly, milestones once thought impossible became reality. Movement returned. Strength followed. After months of therapy and determination, Olivia took her first steps again — a moment that symbolized not just physical progress, but hope.
Today, Olivia is thriving. She proudly earned a spot on her school’s Principal’s Honor Roll and participates in dance and musical theatre, adapting with confidence and creativity. Inspired by the care she received, she now dreams of becoming a surgeon and hopes to one day help others the way her care team helped her.
Because of that teamwork — and because of the generosity that supports it — Olivia’s future is bright.
