In Memory of Robert N. Serros, MD

Orlando Health lost a long-time leader and champion of our mission this past spring with the passing of Robert N. Serros, MD.

Dr. Serros was born at Orlando Health (then known as Orange General Hospital) in 1931. After graduating from Orlando High School, he enrolled at Florida State University, where he was a charter member of Phi Delta Theta. Later, he transferred to the University of Florida, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.

Dr. Serros continued his studies at the University of Miami Medical School, graduating in 1959. While a resident at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, he met his future wife, Rosalee. Dr. Serros joined the U.S. Air Force and served as a flight surgeon for several years.

After returning to Orlando and practicing general medicine for only a short time, Dr. Serros pursued a fellowship in Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. When he returned to Orlando, he opened a private ophthalmology practice and became the first specialist in Osceola County to perform cataract surgery. Throughout his almost fifty-year career, Dr. Serros was dedicated to excellence and pioneering treatments within his field.

Dr. and Mrs. Serros have been generous supporters of Orlando Health’s mission. In 2001, Dr. Serros became a member of the Orlando Health Foundation Philanthropy Council. His leadership was felt throughout his tenure in the group.

Dr. Serros was a dear friend of Orlando Health and the Central Florida community. His legacy of caring and innovation will serve our organization and community for many years to come.

A favorite philosophy, Dr. Serros stated, was:

I think a council member has a responsibility to the community to serve as a picture of dedication and caring. When I tell someone I serve with this group, I hope they think, ‘he must really care.’ I take a great deal of pride in my role and hope that my example will inspire colleagues to support Orlando Health’s mission. People know that when a physician gives, it is a complete endorsement of Orlando Health’s mission.

Who understands the important work of saving lives better than physicians?
