Confident in Care
As a child, Mary witnessed her mother’s challenging battle with breast cancer at only 46 years old. Fast forward 65 years, and Mary received her own diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma breast cancer and knew she had to act quickly. Determined to find the best care, she explored various recommendations and ultimately chose Orlando Health. Her decision was reinforced by her confidence in her surgical physician, Michael Kahky, MD. It was not only his impressive credentials, but his kindness, attentive listening and sense of humor that put Mary at ease.
Just one month after diagnosis, her surgery was scheduled. Afterward, Mary spent three and a half weeks visiting the Orlando Health Cancer Institute in Lake Mary for follow-up radiation treatments and was extremely pleased with the results. Each visit, she was greeted by name at the front desk, a small gesture that made a significant difference in her experience.
Following her radiation treatment, Mary underwent physical therapy at Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, to improve the range of motion in her arm limited by the surgery. Mary also receives care at Orlando Health Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute and will undergo reconstructive surgery once she is ready.
Reflecting on her care, Mary felt she had made the right decision and credited the doctors and team for her successful recovery. She has a great appreciation for Dr. Michael Kahky, her surgeon; Dr. Susan Constantino, her oncologist; Dr. Cameron Swanick, her radiologist; Dr. James Shoukas, her reconstructive surgeon; and all the team members who have made an impact on her healthcare journey.
“I feel like I received the best care I could have gotten anywhere.” – Mary Shephard
A few months later, thanks to her care team at Orlando Health, Mary has returned to doing the things she loves, like spending time outside in her garden.
